How to choose your mountain bike or road bike shorts?
Cycling shorts are a very elaborate technical element whose choice should not be neglected for the cyclist. They make the connection between the rider and his saddle. It must therefore be comfortable. Saddles have evolved a lot (reduction in weight and size, aerodynamics), sometimes to the detriment of comfort unfortunately, it is therefore essential to have good shorts to compensate for this effect.
Lycra
The shorts are made of polyester and lycra. Lycra is like a second skin. It is elastic and allows it to stick to the skin, thus avoiding friction, which allows you to cut through the wind more easily!
Lycra is an antiperspirant material. It allows your body to stay dry during your outing.
The shorts also have vascular and muscular properties. As they are tight, they promote muscle drainage during exercise. After exercise, you can also continue to wear them for a while, this will help reduce aches and pains and the feeling of fatigue.
Above 15 degrees, opt for short cycling shorts. When it's cooler, long cycling shorts are a must.
The insert of the shorts
The insert or chamois serves to absorb shocks and vibrations from the road, as well as to limit friction due to pedaling. It is placed on the surface of the ischiums and perineum. For your comfort, it must therefore cover this surface ideally, without protruding.
The insert can be made of gel or foam. They come in several thicknesses and shapes. For a short bike ride, a normal thickness will be sufficient. On the other hand, if you are a two-wheel enthusiast and spend several hours on the bike, recommend a thicker thickness and gel.
The insert can be sewn onto the shorts, or integrated into them. The latter solution avoids seams, which can cause irritation or even burns at the support points.
Men's and women's bib shorts
Please note: men 's and women's shorts are different in terms of the insert. In fact, the insert is a different shape for women, it is devoid of a central seam in order to adapt to the female physiognomy.
With or without straps
There are 2 models of shorts, with straps or without straps .
The model with straps provides better support and prevents it from coming down when you ride.
The strapless model makes it easier to relieve yourself of your natural needs, especially for women. However, it may come down when you ride and this could be uncomfortable. Not only could your rear end make those behind you smile, but you could also be bothered by the elastic at the belly. Finally, it is also a matter of personal choice. We sell both types of models in our store to satisfy all tastes!
Maintenance and hygiene
Lycra does not like high temperatures and tumble drying, hand washing is recommended. However, a spin in the washing machine at 30 degrees can't hurt it. It is advisable to wash your shorts after each bike ride.
When drying, remember to avoid bending the insert, it could become damaged or deformed.
Cycling shorts and their inserts are treated against bacteria, but this protection disappears over time. In order to extend the life of your shorts, you can use a cycling shorts cream. It will also reduce friction and prevent bacterial infections.
Lifetime
It is difficult to assess the lifespan of your shorts, it depends on many factors. If you compete, in general a pair of shorts can last the season. If you ride occasionally, they can last 2 or 3 years.
The problem often comes from the insert, it ends up deteriorating or cracking. Be sure to take care of it when washing and your shorts will last a long time. As long as the insert is good and comfortable there is no reason to change it.
